Article 24- the right to grow mentally and spiritually.
To kick off mental health week in Year Four we have been having brain breaks in our lessons and this afternoon we are drawing our emotions. We are using colour and pictures so show how we are feeling in our bodies.
Article 36 is the right to be protected from any activities or situations that may cause harm.
Together we talked about standing up for others who are treated unfairly. Yesterday 27th January was Holocaust Memorial Day. We looked at the injustices that the Jewish had to suffer during World War II and we listened to a story about the people of Denmark and their King and the people stood up for others who were being treated unfairly.
In Year Six, we have been looking at this article and making sure we are thinking about our mental and physical health and keeping socially connected at a time when it is hard to see all of our friends. We had an in-school and at-home joint scavenger hunt one afternoon this week and had fun together. We took part in exercise at home and at school. We have also taken part in mindfulness activities to relax and focus our minds.
While learning about the water cycle this week, Jackson had the brilliant idea to present his learning through British Sign Language. We were looking for ways to teach other children and this perfectly suits our right to share and respect all cultures and languages.
In Year One we wore odd socks to school to support anti-bullying week. We talked about how important it is to recognise that everyone is different and that those differences should be celebrated. We wore our odd socks with pride and even designed our own pairs of odd socks!
We talked about how we should treat one another and the types of behaviour that are unacceptable and what we should do if we feel unhappy about how we are being treated by others. We designed our own puzzle pieces showing ways we could be kind to each other and look after one another.
Today the children showed their support for children in need by coming to school dressed in spots or yellow. They also took part in a fun Pudsey colouring competition and discussed the reasons why they were raising money and the important work Children in Need does.
Children have the right to protection and freedom from war. To celebrate how lucky we are to live in a country where we are not affected by war, and to show our respect for those who have lost their lives or thought for their freedom, we are decorating poppies and displaying them around school.
This morning, our Rights Ambassadors presented all their hard work in our virtual assembly. They talked about all the things they have done to make positive changes in school and what they have done to respond to children’s views. They also announced their most recent project which has come from children’s requests in our Voice books- more playground equipment! We are therefore going to work with Earthwrights to build some amazing new equipment on the playground! Visit the website below to get an idea of what we are looking into. Also below are the achievements our Ambassadors have made over the last year, all based on pupil feedback and helping other children.
We have raised £307 for Send a Cow!
Plastic art- We want you to design in your classes a piece of art work. We will then collect and recycle plastic from around school so we can make the winning art piece.
Hitts food bank- We have been collecting food and sending it to our local food bank to help local children and their families during this difficult time.
Shoe swap- We held a shoe swap and donated all our old shoes to children in Africa who are suffering.
Thanks to your crafty activities we collected over £150 for children around the world by selling your crafts. The money you raised is helping children affected by illness, poverty and flooding.
Windows, Mirrors, Doors- we have introduced a reflection time/area in to all classrooms so that children can celebrate and reflect upon the ows and wows in their lives.
Our ambassador, Poppy, wanted to plant trees to help the environment! We wrote to New Wood Trees and they have responded, agreeing to send us 13 trees (one for each class) to plant and care for.
What a busy year it has been!
This is our Froglets Class Charter. We have all added our handprints to ‘agree’ to the statements and we will be looking at this over the next few weeks together in class. We have the right… to be happy, to be safe, to be healthy and to learn. We have the responsibility… to listen, to respect others, to make the right choice and to be kind. These statements all link in to the UNICEF articles we focus on fro our Rights Respecting Schools initiative.
Article 31 ‘Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities.’
In Year One we had a day thinking all about happiness. The children came to School wearing yellow clothing to help raise money for Young Minds charity. We talked about happiness and how we all have the right to feel happy and safe.
We had a range of activities to help us spread some joy and happiness. We made happy hats, made each other cards to make each other feel special, drew pictures of the things that made us happy and even danced along to happy songs!
