Year 5 – Learning about Refugees

In year 5, we have started reading our new class novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q Rauf.

One of the main characters is a boy called Ahmet who is a refugee. To give us a better understanding of Ahmet as a character and what he may have experienced prior to arriving in our story, we have been learning about what it means to “seek refuge” and to be a “refugee”.

We have learnt lots about it today and how this links to our human rights and how refugee charities and support groups are ensuring every refugee’s basic human rights are met and supported.

Year 5 are focused on our rights

This term in PSHE, Year 5 have been learning all about our rights as children through the UNICEF Convention on the Rights of the Child. We’ve found out what it means to have rights and why they are so important for every child in the world.

We’ve talked about how our rights help us feel safe, respected and listened to, and how they give us the chance to grow, learn and be the best we can be. We know that we all have a voice and we can use it to make our school an even better place for everyone.

Learning about our rights has made us think more carefully about our choices and how we treat others. We’re proud to be rights-respecting and we are always looking for ways to use what we’ve learned in our everyday school life.

Learning about Rights in Year 3

In PSHE lessons, Year 3 have been discussing Rights as part of our ‘Relationships’ topic. As part of this topic we have been thinking about global citizens and how there are many of us on this planet who live very different lives to us but one thing that connects us all, are our Rights. We have been learning about our Rights and have started to design posters about a particular Right that they think is important. Well done Year 3.

Fundraising for Team Seas

In collaboration with Earth Day last week, the Eco Council planned two days of activities. Children were invited to attend school wearing blues and greens. There was no charge for this but we let parents know that if they wanted to give a donation they could. We impressively raised £92. The Eco Council decided that they wanted to send the money to Team Seas, a charity that for every £ donated, a pound of plastic will be removed from the ocean. We are very excited that we have made such a big difference to the oceans, we hope to encourage more to donate to this good cause so our planet wins over plastic pollution. Thank you to everyone who donated. We have the right to protect out planet and have a voice.

Children in Need in Year 3

Today in Year 3 we thought about why we have a charity and day to recognise Children in Need. We connected this to our rights and worship to connect this to our learning and values in school.

We made a pledge to always help others who are less fortunate than ourselves. We signed this with a fingerprint to make Pudsey Bear spotty, as this is the theme for Children in Need 2023.
