Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day is a day when we think about the bad things that happened to the Jewish people during world war ll.

Last week for Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January we made candles, and wrote the names of people who had sought justice in our world.  There were lots of different people who we learned about, from Anne Frank to Martin Luther King.  We decorated the candles and then used them to update our display in the hall.

On the day we took assembly for KS2 and we learnt more about the day and why it is so important.  We then watched a video, with survivors and their families taking part in a rememberance service at Trafalgar square.  It was lit with the colour purple and all the people present had a candle.

In KS1 we wrote the names of people we are grateful for on the candles and in our classes, we talked about how it is important to be kind to people even when they are different to us.

As part of the assembly each class was given 2 candles so that we too could take part in the act of remembrance.  We remember so we can make sure that these awful things never happen again.

Article 31 – The Right to relax and Play

In Holly and Oak class we had great fun doing a mindful tasting activity. We each had a chocolate button that we had to explore using our senses before we were finally able to eat it! We have been learning about how to look after our mental health through learning about our brains and one way to help our brains is to have some mindful moments throughout the day.

KS2 Police Visit

Today the community police officers visited and did an assembly to our KS2 children. They talked about their role in the community, how they keep everyone safe and how to be safe online. The children then had the chance to ask any questions. Article 40: I have the right to get legal help and to be treated fairly if I have been accused of breaking the law. This also links to our Christian Value this half term of Justice

Article 24

Part of this right says that we have the right to the best healthcare possible. In Oak and Holly class, we have been learning about different ways to stay healthy.

Every school day after lunch, we brush our teeth together. This helps protect our teeth and keep them in good health.

Class Charter

In Reception the children helped to create their own ‘Class Charters’. We worked together to look at the different rights and thought about which ones were important to us and our class. We then thought about ways we could respect these rights, such as making sure we raise our hand when we speak so everyone can be heard or helping our friends to feel happy and loved if they are upset or sad. We also decided that the right to play was very important and that in order to respect this right we would try our best to share and take turns with our friends as well as looking after our toys by helping to tidy them away when we had finished playing. To show that we all agreed with the class charter we put a finger print on it and they are now displyed in our classrooms.

Article 29: Talents and abilities.

Our education should help us use and develop our talents and abilities. It should help us learn peacefully, protect our environment and respect other people.

In year one we have been settling into our new class and thinking about how we can ‘reach for the stars’ throughout the year. We read ‘ How to catch a star’ by Oliver Jeffers and thought about how our goals and aspirations are like stars. We thought about the things we want to achieve throughout the year and how we need to behave in order to achieve our goals.

We completed some artwork to display in the School to remind us that we can achieve anything we set our minds to!
