Article 9: You have the right to live with a family that cares for you.

This week within our class worship we shared the story of ‘Can’t you sleep Little Bear?’. We thought about how the Daddy Bear was caring for the Liitle Bear when he was feeling scared and couldn’t sleep.

We reflected on our own bedtimes and how our families help us to feel safe and nurtured when we are going to sleep. Some of us like having nightlights, some of us don’t. Some have the door open and some have it closed. We realise that we are all different and all have the right to feel safe and be cared for.

Duty bearers

This term our right of the term is Article 1- the right to know and access our rights including making sure all adults can teach us about them. We are refreshing our knowledge of rights and making sure everyone knows about them!

In Year 3 we talked about who our duty bearers are- adults who are responsible for making sure we access our rights on a daily basis. We made cards to thank them for everything they do to help us and look out for us. We will be delivering them around school over the coming week 😀

Planning

Today we planned what we are going to do for the next few weeks and it is based around respecting people in need. We are going to be doing Christian Aid week, teaching our own lessons to other classes and fundraising for our own charity choices. Look out for our work on here and Facebook!

Year 2: Earth Day!

Year 2 have been celebrating Earth Day today, and we are all wearing green and blue! We have discussed the importance of protecting and caring for our planet and we linked this in with Article 29 – learning to live peacefully, protecting the environment and respecting other people.

Freedom of beliefs

In a year One we have been learning that everyone had the right to freedom of thought and beliefs. We have been learning about Holi Festival which is a Hindu festival of colours.

We talked about the different ways that they celebrate by sharing special food and throwing powder paints.

We designed vibrant, colourful Holi T-shirts.

Article 38- Freedom from war

All children have the right to be protected from war. This also encompasses their right to shelter, good food and water, an education and to be cared for by their parents where possible.

In January, we explored the importance of Holocaust memorial day. We learned about what happened during the Holocaust and all the people affected by Nazi rule. We also learned about more recent Holocaust events in different countries and how many people around the world are still suffering the effects of inequality and injustice.

Our Rights Ambassadors learned a Rwandan peace dance which demonstrates their desire for peace and unity. They learned about the inequalities suffered by many Rwandan people and how this has affected the lives of children just like them. They performed the dance to KS2 and since January some of our classes have been learning the dance too.

The dance is being shared in Praise assembly on Friday so look out for it on our big screen 🙂

Article 29: You have the right to an education that helps you to develop your skills and talents.

In Reception this week we went on an imaginary rocket ship to the future and thought about what our favourite job would be as an adult. We explored different occupations and discussed what we might need to learn to be able to do that job. We shared ideas in talk partners and as a class. Some of our favourite ideas were police officers, vets, doctors and an Olympic trampolinist. In our learning time we drew pictures of our dream job. We can’t wait to continue our good learning that will help us reach our goals!

When I grow up, I would like to be a… bin man, hairdresser, doctor and artist

Year 2: Article 12

Article 12 – You have the right to give your opinion and for adults to listen and take it seriously.

This week in English, Year 2 have been voting on how we can change the materials in our Three Little Pigs story. As a class using a fair voting system, we chose a weak material, slightly stronger material and a really strong material. We discussed this and linked it in with our rights and British Values.
