Year Six – Articles 2, 12 and 30

In guided reading this week, Year Six read the poem ‘The Undefeated’ by Kwame Alexander. The book has fantastic illustrations depicting famous people of colour who have shown resilience, perseverance and courage when faced with adversity. Their talents, beliefs and practices were all challenged at some point but they showed the world that they wouldn’t back down and their work should be respected and acknowledged. We linked these ideas with articles 12 and 30.

In PSHE this week, we also focused on article 2 centred around our identities. We learnt a song about individuality and celebrating similarities and differences.

Odd Socks Day in Year One

As part of Anti-bullying week we all wore odd socks to school and talked about ‘One Kind Word.’ It sparked discussions about tolerance and respect for all our differences.

We watched CBeebies Live Lesson and found out about the different roles involved in bullying, what bullying is and how to help ourselves and others.

We then made our own Anti-bullying posters and linked it to Article 19- the right to be protected from being hurt and mistreated.

Reception have been looking at this month’s Right, Every child has the right to practice the religion of their choice. We have looked at the Hindu festival of Diwali and explored the different ways that it is celebrated. We dressed up in saris, made rangoli patterns and tasted some Indian snacks. It was gret fun learning about a different religion.

Article 31: The Right to Rest & Play in Year 5

This is one of the children’s rights that they have no trouble embracing. Within the school day, all children have a lunchtime break during which most will typically both rest and play. In addition, every class has at least one scheduled playtime during the morning, with younger age groups having a further time to rest and play in the afternoon. Still further, there are always short ‘down times’ within the working day at the discretion of the teacher – brain breaks, quiet reading and mindfulness colouring being among the activities that children can engage with.

They sent their letter and got responses from B&Q and Otter Nurseries- Jack’s Patch! Thanks to B&Q we have over 2000 seeds to plant and (pictured below) are some amazing seed bombs and wild flower packets from Jack’s Patch!

Thank you to both businesses and well done to our ambassadors.

“I have the right to relax and have fun” Reception children were all really excited to return to school to see all their friends and teachers after the half term break. We started our new project on Minibeasts with a surprise…. our teachers had bought in some locusts and crickets for us to observe. Then we had another delivery and it is tiny caterpillars. We are looking forward to watching how they change into butterflies. We also have Barry the African snail to observe. We have been painting our favourite minibeasts and learning to double using spots on butterflies and ladybirds. We have been sorting minibeasts and have made play dough snails! It has been great fun and an exciting start to our new topic!
