Year 2: Article 12, 13 and 28

This week in Year 2, we linked our English learning to children’s rights from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. While exploring The Three Little Pigs, the children were given the chance to vote on which characters and materials we could change in our story. This supported Article 12, which says children have the right to share their views and have them listened to.
The children explained their ideas, listened respectfully to others and accepted the outcome of the vote, showing great responsibility. This also linked to Article 13, the right to express ideas, and Article 28, the right to education, as the children were actively involved in their learning. Year 2 showed that when children’s rights are respected, learning is engaging, fair and fun.

Year 2: Harvest Festival

Article 24 (health and health services)
Every child has the right to the best
possible health. Governments must
provide good quality health care, clean
water, nutritious food, and a clean
environment and education on health
and well-being so that children can stay
healthy. Richer countries must help poorer
countries achieve this.

This week Year 2 have been thinking about Harvest. Harvest is celebrated to give thanks for the crops, which have been safely harvested. Christians thank God for the food during the harvest festival. They believe God made the world and everything in it and so thank God for the variety of food and everything that helps the food to grow.

Year 2: Terrariums!

This week we have been thinking about Article 6 and how humans, animals and plants all have the right to life, survival and development. So, Year 2 have continued their science learning about plants. We are planning to make our own terrariums! We discussed the water cycle and what plants need to survive and we designed our own terrariums. We will report back once they are up and running so keep an eye out!

Article 17 – Year 2

In Year 2, we know we have the right to information that helps our wellbeing, and the right to express how we’re feeling. We use ‘How Are You Feeling’ charts each day to monitor and express our wellbeing. We learn about how to improve and maintain our wellbeing in Mind Up sessions every week.

Year 2: Article 12/Democracy

This afternoon we have been thinking about our British Values, specifically democracy. We recapped what this means and linked it in with the Michael Rosen story – This is Our House. We discussed being fair and creating fair rules for everyone, we have the right to make choices and treat people fairly. We also linked this into Article 12 of our rights which is the right to give your opinion, and for adults to listen and take it seriously.

Year 2: Earth Day!

Year 2 have been celebrating Earth Day today, and we are all wearing green and blue! We have discussed the importance of protecting and caring for our planet and we linked this in with Article 29 – learning to live peacefully, protecting the environment and respecting other people.
