Every child has the right to a say in matters that affect them. Year Four have been working on this right recently by writing to Kingsteignton Council about bee highways and saving our environment. The result so far is that Kingsteignton Council have built a giant bug hotel on Rydon Lane! Have a look out for it if you are in the area!

Red Nose Day
On Friday 19th March, it was Red Nose Day and the theme was using the ‘power of funny’. In Year Four we all wrote down our favourite jokes and shared them throughout the day which was fun. This year we raised money for Comic Relief by having a non-uniform day. Children could come into school in non-uniform in exchange for a small donation of money online to help support children less fortunated than themselves. This links to Article 26 of the children’s rights charter:
Article 26 of the UNCRC says that children and young people should get financial support from the government when their parents or guardians are unable to provide them with a good enough standard of living by themselves.

Tree planting
This week we have begun planting the trees that were donated to us by New Wood Ltd following a letter written by our Rightys Ambassadors. The trees are a reminder of the effects of climate change and what we can do as Global Citizens to support the efforts around the world to stop this. In Year Six, the children planted two Silver Birch trees. Hey discussed the importance of looking after them and the impact they will have on th environment.

Tree planting
Article 12: We have the right to have our say in things that affect us.
Article 27: We have the right to live and grow in good conditions.
Today we had some trees arrive as a donation from New Wood Ltd in Stoke Gifford. We have Silver Birch, Crabapple and Field Maple to plant. The donation was very kindly made thanks to a letter written by our Rights Ambassadors asking for help to recognise and promote the effects of climate change. We will be planting them as classes next week!

The right to rest and play
Year Four loved spending time on our new play equipment from Earthwtights yesterday. The equipment is made of all natural products so supports our environment and made for a very exciting play time!

Mental health week
Article 24- the right to grow mentally and spiritually.
To kick off mental health week in Year Four we have been having brain breaks in our lessons and this afternoon we are drawing our emotions. We are using colour and pictures so show how we are feeling in our bodies.

The right to speak your own language
While learning about the water cycle this week, Jackson had the brilliant idea to present his learning through British Sign Language. We were looking for ways to teach other children and this perfectly suits our right to share and respect all cultures and languages.

Article 29- hello yellow day
This week classes in school have been watching videos and doing activities from Buckfastleigh Abbey. In year four we talked about what makes us happy and had some quiet time with some happy music.
In year five we watched some videos about calm places and talked about where we can go to help calm down. Hopefully you did some exciting or calming activities too!
Today everyone is dressed in yellow for Hello Yellow day. This is to remind us that we can all find time each day to find happiness and do things that make us feel calm. The money you donate today will go to help young people and children who are finding this hard. Young minds is a group of lovely people who are helping young people and children find their happy place. They do lots of work to look after these children and teach them skills to make their minds healthy.

Yoga and mindfulness
Article 29
This afternoon Mr Basha taught Beech class some yoga games and mindfulness tricks. They were really relaxed and enjoyed learning the different moves. In such a busy world it’s really important that we all take the time to rest our minds and look after our mental wellbeing.
